Tāmaki Makaurau

August 2nd – 4th

Creating for the sake of creating is a beautiful, wonderful thing: We love it so much, we made a weekend just for it. Experience: messdisasterjoy, and community.

This year, the Terrible Ideas Hackathon is taking place in B201 at the University of Auckland, with support from the Centre for Innovation and Entreprenureship. We’re all in on terrible ideas, so bring your best friends and worst skills for a great weekend.

In 46 Hours, You Will:

  • Come up with a terrible idea

Your goal should be to enter this weekend with an empty head. Bring friends, but not ideas! Participants will spend the first night meeting new people, building a team, and deciding what mad scientist invention they want to make over the next two days.

We’ll provide the tools, expert help, and a room full of clever people: you make your worst nightmare. You’ll spend most of the weekend making: We’ll get in your way as little as possible.

  • Present the creation!

At the end of the weekend, we leave time for you to share what you’ve made. Wrap everything up neatly and explore a world of terrible creations!

We won’t be open overnight, so we encourage you make arrangements to get home. We’d strongly recommend public transport where possible, as you’ll likely be quite tired!

  • 5:45 pm – Sign-in desk opens
  • 6:00 pm – Pre-hack gathering. If this is your first Hackathon, this is for you!

You’re welcome to stay for as much or as little as you’d like (no need to arrive or leave when we open &  close), but we recommend sticking around for the show & tell if you can. You will need to make your own arrangements for transport home on Friday and Saturday nights, as we’re unable to provide a space to sleep overnight.

The Maker Space’s hours are from Saturday: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm, and Sunday: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.

If there is anything specific you’d like to use for your project feel free to bring it in! This could include laptops, art supplies, desktop PCs, tools, or electronics! Multi plugs and extension cords could be useful too!

WHEN: 2nd – 4th of August.

The hackathon lasts for 46 hours starting on Friday 2nd August at 6pm.

“Pens-down” is Sunday 4th August 4pm. There will be a chance to showcase work and a closing ceremony too!

The event space will be closed overnight Friday and Saturday. We’re not THAT hardcore!
